Newcastle fans have been preparing for their return to the Premier League for some weeks now in the Transfer Tavern.
Rafael Benitez’s successful campaign in the Championship saw the Magpies experience a comfortable route back in to the Premier League despite the race for the league title going down to the wire with fellow promoted side, Brighton and Hove Albion. However, the strong squad possessed by Benitez was enough to see them come up and there seems to be a decent amount of Premier League quality among the Toon Army’s ranks although the Newcastle fans in the Tavern are praying Benitez brings in the type of player that really solidify the club’s place in the top flight.
Of course, this is easier said than done but our landlord feels Newcastle will attract quality players due to its reputation as well as the pulling power of Rafa Benitez. He believes the north east club will also have to sell to make room for new signings and he has been putting his two pennies worth in to who should be coming and going out of St. James’ Park this summer.
Our resident Geordies agree and the debate in the Tavern has progressed to what business Benitez should deal with early this summer.
Here are the players Newcastle should axe as well as they players they should sign sooner rather than later…
Signed two years ago with high hopes upon his shoulders, Aleksandar Mitovic could find himself out of St. James’ Park come the start of next season.
The £13million man did not really hit it off in the Championship last season as he was forced to watch Dwight Gayle lead the line as Newcastle got promoted and it is punters here think he may may be axed to bring in other forward targets this summer.
Our landlord believes although Mitrovic may have all the potential in the world, his attitude will limit him and potentially also stifle the Magpies’ hopes next season.
Whether it be on loan or on a permanent deal, Newcastle fans in the Tavern would love to see a natural goalscorer such as Tammy Abraham come through the gates of St James’ Park.
The England U21 international smashed in 23 Championship goals last season whilst on loan at Bristol City and the talk in the Tavern is that Abraham is ready for a chance in the Premier League.
Although a strong Championship defender, our landlord is not convinced that Hanley has what it takes to be part of a solid defence within the Premier League.
Our resident Magpies in the Tavern agree and they would be happy to see the Scottish international go back to the Championship early this summer.
This will then free up some space in the Newcastle squad and allow Benitez to bring a real quality centre back into the club.
The 23-year-old is in high demand at present and there is no doubt that Rafael Benitez needs to move fast in order to bring Semedo to the club.
Samedo’s versatility is something that has excited our landlord and whilst the Sporting Lisbon man can play defensive midfield, it is noted that his strongest position is at centre back.
The fans in the Tavern are keen to see Benitez secure their man and show a signal of intent within this summer’s transfer window
